CSGS & Skytte Joint Lecture Series - Myanmar Coup: Civil-Military Relations, Conflicts, and Challenges to Democratic Transformation

A crisis is emerging in Southeast Asia. During the past month, Myanmar is struggling with a domestic socio-political crisis that massively impacts the country's life. On February 1st, 2021, the Myanmar military launched a power struggle by arresting and detaining Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint, and several key figures of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party. The coup took place just before the new parliament was scheduled to hold its first post-election meeting. After the arrest, the Myanmar military imposed a state of emergency and power was taken by the Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar's Armed Forces, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

This condition has created a constitutional crisis in Myanmar since the junta was abolished in 2010. The situation, however, has since attracted the concern of various parties, both at the regional and global level. States' responses (such as China and the US) have differed, with some staying neutral and choosing not to comment. ASEAN and its member states are also in the spotlight. Their responses to the situation is crucial to understand the situation in Myanmar.

What is actually happening in Myanmar, and why such a coup was bound to exist? Were there any underlying conditions leading to the conflict? How do regional and global actors, specifically ASEAN and its member states, respond to the crisis?
