Lecture and presentation of Johan Skytte's biography

On Thursday, 13 December David Lindén will give a talk about Johan Skytte, the Swedish statesman and the first chancellor of the University of Tartu. The presentation will take place at 14:15 at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies, Lossi 36, room 214.

The talk is based on Lindén’s hot-off-the-press biography of Johan Skytte, “Stormaktstidens läromästare” (The Educator of The Swedish Great Power Era), which focuses on Skytte’s life and on the role he played in the Swedish history, especially in terms of education. Johan Skytte (1577-1645) is known in Sweden as the tutor of Prince Gustavus Adolphus, the future king, and the chancellor of Uppsala University. However, Skytte was appointed as Governor-General of Livonia, Ingria and Karelia in 1629, and the chancellor of the University of Tartu in 1632. The Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies at the University of Tartu has been named after him, partly to note this connection and contribution.

David Lindén is a Swedish historian and journalist, and he is currently the editorial writer at the local Swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda. Early in his life, he developed a passion for Swedish history, and received his PhD in the subject from King's College (University of London) in 2015. In 2016, he published a biography about the bishop and politician Hemming Gadh (ca 1450-1520). In November 2018 he published the first-ever biography of Johan Skytte in Swedish. Since 2017, David Lindén is a corresponding member of the Royal Skyttean Society.
