HubIT workshop connected social sciences and humanities with ICT

64 participants, researchers from Tartu University and various Estonian science and teaching institutions, attended the HubIT project Annual Conference and workshop titled “Bridging the gap between social sciences/ humanities and ICT”, which took place on 18 September 2018, in AHHAA Centre in Tartu, Estonia.

The aim of HubIT SSH Workshop was to discuss collaboration between social sciences/humanities and ICT research through success stories and discussions.

The workshop showcased examples of successful cooperation, useful HubIT project findings and tools, and offered a space for discussion between the participants. Mihkel Solvak, head of the Centre for IT Impact Studies talked about future solutions to fire risky behavior prevention using data analysis. Rajesh Sharma, senior research fellow at UT Institute of Computer Science, discussed a Horizon 2020 project SoBigData that creates a comprehensive data infrastructure for social scientists to use in their research. Emanuele Bardone, Senior Research Fellow in Educational Technology, through the topic of retrofuturism, provided a peek into why our ideas and understanding of education lags behind technical solutions. Each presentation was followed by World Cafe discussions on one of the questions mentioned above.

As a result of the event:

• more awareness about the topic of RRI and SSH/ICT collaboration was created;
• participants were motivated to engage in cross disciplinary collaboration through successful examples;
• narratives, opinions and suggestions from the SSH community were collected for the purposes of the project.
