Experiences of post-Soviet transformations discussed at the international conference

On October 24-25, a group of scholars from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States came to Tartu for an interdisciplinary discussion of political, social, cultural, and economic trends in the region 25 years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

The conference "25 Years Later: Post-Soviet Space in 2016. Challenges, Lessons Learned and Outlook for the Future" was organized by the Kennan Institute (Wilson Center, USA) and hosted by the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies and the Centre for EU-Russia Studies. It brought together over 40 participants - university professors, researchers, and journalists from different cities. A series of roundtables were held covering a range of issues: security and cooperation in Europe, good governance, interaction between history and politics, identities and intercultural dialogue, and possible future trajectories for the states in the region.

One of the event highlights was the panel arranged by the host institution, where experts of the University of Tartu - Piret Ehin, Andres Kasekamp, Viktor Trasberg, and Andres Võrk - reflected on the Baltic experience of transition and offered a very comprehensive picture by discussing political, economic, social and societal aspects of that experience.
