German Federal Elections 2021: Post-Merkel Germany – to think is easy, to act is hard
The German federal elections on Sunday, September 26, will mark the end of the 16-year chancellorship of Angela Merkel. While the German electorate seems ready for a change, the volatility and uncertainty of these elections are also somewhat unsettling. Three candidates are vying for the highest position, and a need for some sort of three-party coalition is most likely.
In a wider context, Merkel’s Germany has come to embody certain stability for many in the EU, yet the neutral and consensus-building approach of Merkelism might not be viable nor preferable going further. But while there is a lot of talk both in and around Germany about what ought to change, how eager and able would the next chancellor be to actually change course in their leadership of post-Merkel Germany?
Join the Skytte Election Analysis Seminar on German elections from 16:15 to 18:00 (EEST UTC+3) on Tuesday, September 28, at Lossi 36-214 and online (passcode: 055521).
Leading the discussion on the election results, the legacy of Merkel, and on what changes might happen both in Germany and abroad, will be Analyst Thomas Linsenmaier, PhD candidate Anselm Schmidt, as well as Dr. Eva-Clarita Pettai. The seminar will be moderated by Associate Professor Stefano Braghiroli.
NB! The event will not be recorded!
