Master Class in Policy Writing and Advocacy

Students from the MA-level course on Public Governance held a Master Class on policy writing and advocacy in Tallinn on April 6. The aim of the event was to provide students with a practical experience in the field.

Within the framework of the Public Governance course, students had each prepared a policy analysis paper, profiling a certain issue and advocating a specific policy response. The Master Class was held as a culmination of the course, where the five best papers were presented before an expert on policy analysis and advocacy, Maris Jõgeva, Director of the Network of Estonian Non-Profit Organizations (NENO).

Following each paper presentation, Ms. Jõgeva provided specialized feedback on the quality of research, the visual style, the analytical structure and other important elements. At the end of the Master Class, a jury comprised of Ms. Jõgeva, Kristina Muhhina (instructor of the course) and Vello Pettai (director of the MA programme in Democracy and Governance) reviewed the five presentations. The jury decided to award the Best Paper award to Naira Baghdasaryan for her paper on “Rehabilitation and reintegration of children in conflict with law”.

The Master Class was held in the offices of the Open Estonia Foundation, whose director, Mall Hellam, opened the event with a talk about the work of the Foundation, both currently as well as across its 27-year history of supporting civil society and advocacy in Estonia.
