Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies is honoured to host Prof. Costas M. Constantinou who would be giving two guest lectures on public diplomacy and borderscape in Cyprus. Both lectures would take place on the last week of April in Lossi 36 building, room 305.
Monday, April 22, at 14:15 – 15:45 lecture on “Visual Diplomacy”, Lossi 36-305
The lecture will engage the notion of visual diplomacy — the ways and means by which images are used by plural diplomatic actors to transmit ideas to audiences, producing and circulating meanings that serve particular purposes, with the aim of influencing, shaping and transforming relations between actors and across publics. A case of visual diplomacy, namely that of the first President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, will be examined in detail by showing extracts from his official visits abroad and postcolonial public diplomacy.
Wednesday, April 24, at 14:15 – 15:45 lecture on “Negotiating Borders”, Lossi 36-305
The lecture will explore the predicament of travelling across borders and jurisdictions in Cyprus. It will employ extracts from a recently completed video based on field research. The video and lecture will navigate and explain the complexity of the Cypriot borderscape, which combines a de jure and a de facto state, a UN Buffer Zone, a British Sovereign Base, and an EU external border, and thus the challenges and opportunities of having to live with and negotiate the diverse ‘divisons’ of the island
Costas M. Constantinou is Professor of International Relations at the University of Cyprus, with cross-cutting interests in diplomacy, conflict, international political theory, and legal and normative aspects of international relations. His research has received international awards and distinctions, and external funding by, inter alia, the EU 7th Framework Programme, EEA Grants and the Leverhulme Trust.
