International workshop in University of Tartu

The aim of the workshop is to initiate and extend cooperation in the field of Asian and Middle Eastern studies between University of Tartu and University of Cambridge, to enable scholars to present their research themes, to find possibilities for cooperation and to help PhD students present their current work and to find ideas for future research. This workshop includes topics from China and India to Semitic, Middle East and Persia Studies. The presentations will transmit the research interests between University of Tartu and University of Cambridge.

This two-day event is organized around lectures by different plenary speakers from England, Norway, China and Estonia:

Dr Nadia Vidro  (University of Cambridge, Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Affiliated Researcher in Hebrew Studies)

Dr Robert Harding (University of Cambridge, Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Affiliated Researcher in Indian Languages and Cultures)

Prof Per Kværne (Univerity of Oslo, Professor Emeritus)

Prof Lisheng Dong (University of Tartu, Faculty of Social Sciences, Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies, Professor of Asian Politics)

Prof Ülo Valk (University of Tartu, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Institute of Cultural Research, Professor of Estonian and Comparative Folklore)

The plenary lectures and the conference sessions will be open to the public. A series of closed roundtable discussion sessions are organized to help participants to deepen and refine their understanding of these topics through concentrated discussions.

We welcome participants from across disciplines at PhD and MA levels of study. Students who are not members of University of Tartu humanities graduate schools are required to add a short CV to specify their education and research interests.

The working language of the seminar is English.

LOCATION: Ülikooli 18, main building of University of Tartu, Senate hall (on the second floor)

2 ECTS points will be awarded for full participation in the program, including the “Roundtable Discussion session for Doctoral students.”

Participation is free of charge.

The workshop is co-organized by the University of Tartu Asian Centre, Institute of Cultural Research, School of Theology and Religious Studies, Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies and the Estonian Graduate School of Culture Studies and Arts, The event is financed by the University of Tartu ASTRA Project PER ASPERA (European Regional Development Fund).
