Conflict resolution study trip to Cyprus

On 7-15 April, 10 students from the International Relations and Regional Studies (IRRS) Masters’ program visited Cyprus to conclude their course work on “Ethno-national conflict in Cyprus: Conflict Resolution and Mediation Policies” with a seminar series.

The trip – led by Prof. Eiki Berg with assistance from Phd Program Director Maili Vilson – guided the students through a variety of towns and cities in Cyprus both in the north and south including Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, Pila, and Larnaca where they had the opportunity to speak with experts on the Cyprus conflict consisting of academics, political officials, and NGOs on both sides.

The week was filled with informative lectures and discussions regarding the history of the Cyprus conflict and its current status. Topics included Socio-Political Legacies of Ottoman and British Empires, Emergence of Ethno-Nationalism, Formation of the Republic of Cyprus, Inter-communal Conflicts and War, Role of External Actors, and Unofficial Efforts for the Resolution of the Cyprus Conflict. Additionally, students had Q & A sessions with political officials and representatives of the Home for Cooperation.

The students were also provided with guided city tours and ample free time to explore on their own, interact with the local population, and enjoy the natural Mediterranean beauty of the island. Upon conclusion of the trip the students had experienced all four zones of the divided island and obtained firsthand experience of life in a conflicted territory. By doing so, they gained invaluable experience in the field of conflict resolution and mediation.
