Call for Applications: spring school on methods in Area Studies

The Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies, the University of Lund and the University of Copenhagen are holding a one-week intensive course for MA and advanced BA students, focusing on Theories and Methodologies in Area Studies.

The course will take place on 12-17 March in Tartu. The aim of the course is to provide practical training on methods for MA and BA students who are writing their theses.

Throughout the course, the most useful theoretical and methodological approaches within Area Studies will be introduced, including cultural theories, ethnography, literary approaches, working with quantitative data, history and memory studies, discourse theory and content analysis.

During the week, participants will be involved in a series of lectures, seminars, hands-on workshops and field trips to cultural sites around Tartu and Tallinn. The course also offers a great opportunity for students to discuss their research ideas with peers and academic staff from the Universities of Lund, Copenhagen and Tartu.

The course constitutes 5 ECTS and is assessed by a 5-8-page essay, which must be submitted 3 weeks after the end of the course.

To participate, please send a short application that includes an introduction, your research interest and previous experiences with the methods (half a page to 1 page) by 19 February to Heiko Pääbo (heiko.paabo@ut.ee). The course is free of charge, students are expected to cover local costs (e.g. meals, tickets).

For more information, please contact Heiko Pääbo, heiko.paabo@ut.ee
