Human Trafficking in Central Asia and Eastern Europe

The workshop on Human Trafficking in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, based on the University Modules of the UNODC Education for Justice (E4J) initiative, will explore legal, political, economic, and social issues associated with human trafficking illustrated by the cases from various countries, including from Central Asia and Eastern Europe. It will cover a definition of trafficking and related international legal framework grounded in the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocol against Trafficking in Persons. It will also describe typical profiles of victims and traffickers and cover trafficking flows, evolving trends, and patterns. It will then review the root causes of trafficking as well as States’ duties to prevent this crime and identify preventive strategies, as well as explore how to monitor, evaluate, and report on their effectiveness.

The workshop lasts 4 hours, with a little break between two sessions.

Elena Zhirukhina is a Senior Lecturer at the OSCE Academy in Bishkek and Research Associate at the University of St Andrews, an expert in the fight against human traffic, holder of fellowships and scholarships funded by the European Commission (Marie Curie Fellowship and Erasmus+), the Council of Europe, the Swiss Government. She has also worked on joint research projects funded by the Russian and Norwegian Governments. At the moment, Elena is conducting research on the relationship between the federal center and regions in Russia.
