Winter school brought students to Estonia from all over the world
Senior BA, MA and PhD Students from Russia, Poland, Germany, France, USA and Taiwan are participating in the winter school Biopower and Semiotics of the Body” organized by the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies.
The school was opened on February 19 by Prof Andrey Makarychev (University of Tartu) and the programme continues with lectures by Dr Maxim Waldstein (University of Amsterdam), Jakko Turunen (Sodertorns University), Abel Polese (Universities of Tallinn and Dublin) and Prof Sergei Medvedev (Higher School of Economics, Moscow).
Winter school’s programme focuses particularly on the cultural semiotic reading of various facets of biopolitical practices and relations. It explores different dimensions of biopolitics, biopower and corporeality and relate them with domestic and foreign policies of major international actors.
This school is part of an international project “Escapes from Modernity” which has been organizing seasonal schools in several European countries since 2007.
The venue of the School is Kääriku Leisure and Sports Centre of the University of Tartu, situated in a beautiful area in Valga County, about 40 km south of Tartu, near the Otepää winter resort.
