UT student chapter of European Horizons established
As a result of the initiative of the students from the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies and a thorough application and review process, a University of Tartu (UT) chapter of a think tank European Horizons has been established.
European Horizons is a non-partisan US-based think-tank devoted to exploring the meaning of European identity, modernizing and reforming the concept of the social market economy, advancing the cause of European integration, and deepening transatlantic relations. To this end, European Horizons has established a network of students, professors, and European decision-makers, with links to academia, politics, civil society, and business.
The successful application process has been led by Ng Chun Sing, first-year student at the European Union – Russia Studies MA programme, who will also serve as the chapter’s first president. He pointed out that UT is the first Baltic chapter of the European Horizons, and one of the few in Central and Eastern Europe: “I envision our chapter to be the cornerstone of building further partnerships between Yale University and University of Tartu for years to come”.
Think-tank membership includes chapters from more than 60 European and North American universities including Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Cornell and Johns Hopkins University as well as London School of Economics, University College London, and The Humboldt University of Berlin. Former president of the European Central Bank Jean-Claude Trichet, former WTO General Director Pascal Lamy, and former EU Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding are currently chairing the think-tank’s advisory board.
According to the EURUS Director Dr Stefano Braghiroli who will serve as an academic adviser to the chapter, “this result does not only prove the centrality and engagement of our student community but it will also give our students the possibility to establish inspiring friendships as well as numerous networking opportunities and fertile intellectual exchange with some of the world’s leading universities”.
