Professorship of Asian Politics founded at the Institute
As of 1 August, Lisheng Dong took up the Professorship of Asian Politics at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies.
Professor Lisheng Dong has received his doctoral degree from Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen (now University of Antwerp) in the field of Political and Social Sciences. He has held various academic positions at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, worked as a research fellow at the International Institute for Asian Studies in the Netherlands, and as a Marie Curie professorial fellow at the University of Glasgow. His main research domains are public administration in China and comparative politics.
Dr Mihkel Solvak, Acting Director of the Institute, explains that Professor Dong will start developing Asian Studies at the University of Tartu: „ Since the University of Tartu is in the process of creating a new Master programme in Asian Studies and therefore also expanding research in this domain, we will benefit immensely from Professor Dong’s experience and networks.“
The Professorship in Asian Politics is only one of several Asian Studies-oriented activities at the University of Tartu. In 2016, the university established the Asian Centre which will coordinate all thematic activities at the university. The Centre is funded under the ASTRA scheme by the Archimedes Foundation of Estonia.
