Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials visited the Skytte Institute
On Friday, January 13th, the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies received visitors from the Department for European Affairs of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to hear academic reports on current affairs.
The visit by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials was related to their team building event. As a part of their programme in Tartu, they wished to gain an overview of some of the recent developments in foreign politics from an academic point of view, and to exchange thoughts in these matters.
Stefano Braghiroli, lecturer in European Studies, led the discussion focused on Turkey, namely the domestic developments after the coup attempt in the summer of 2016, the relations between Turkey and the European Union as well as on the prospects of further EU enlargement in general. Our doctoral student Louis Wierenga talked about the emergence of far right parties in Europe, with the discussion also touching the issue of the rise of populist trends in both Europe and the United States of America.
Both the lecturers as well as the students of the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies appreciated the opportunity to meet with the Ministry’s officials, and we would be glad to host meetings in a similar format in the future.
