Ministry of Defence supports our students with scholarship
This year, the Ministry of Defence is supporting research in the field of defence by awarding scholarships to seven Master’s students studying at Estonia’s public universities. We are happy to announce that two of them, Elina Libek and Peeter Pals, are studying at Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies!
Elina Libek is studying International Relations and Regional studies and Peeter Pals European Union and Russia studies. Both of them are going to write their master thesis on the topic “The strategic autonomy of the European Union”. More specifically, they are seeking to answer the questions: What are the different meanings given to the concept "strategic autonomy" among the EU member states and how do those divergent understandings affect the practical cooperation aimed to achieve the seemingly shared goal of the EU becoming strategically more independent in its defence and security matters.
„Over the past few years, the EU has been very vocal about the need of becoming more autonomous in the area of defence and security. However, it does seem that right now the member states are lacking a clear and shared vision about the essence of this goal. Therefore it's both, academically and practically important to explore the dynamics of the ongoing discussions,“ said Libek.
Pals added: "In the European Union, the issue of achieving greater independence in the field of defense and security policy has emerged very much over the last few years, but it is clear that member countries lack a clear shared vision.”
Receiving a scholarship came as a surprise and as a recognition to both of them. Libek and Pals admitted, that it is a great motivation not only to give their absolute best while writing the thesis, but also to continue to work hard in the future.
