Let's write together the Schuman Declaration of 2020
2020 marks the 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, proclaimed by the French Foreign Minister on May 9, 1950. This historical statement has remained in European history as the speech that has launched European integration. Europe Day is thus symbolically celebrated on May 9th.
For this reason, within the framework of the project “Schuman 2.0” managed by the Union of European Federalists, grass-root events have been organized across Europe to reflect on this fundamental milestone in our continent’s history and to imagine together the future of European integration! The Tartu session is organized in cooperation with and locally managed by the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies of the University of Tartu.
Join us in Tartu to imagine the future of the European Union! Seventy years after that history-making moment, it is your turn to make history and to write a new statement inspired by the words of Robert Schuman to address Europe’s current challenges and envision the future of our common European home!
The Tartu grass-root event consists of two days of activities. On February 28, two panel sessions will be held to discuss the historical context of the declaration and the challenges faced by today’s Europe. The panels will be open to everyone interested. On February 29, the registered participants, grouped in teams, will write the Tartu Schuman declaration of 2020. The day will be concluded with a high-level panel including policy-makers, Members of the European Parliament, and opinion-makers addressing the content of the teams’ declarations.
The authors of the best declaration will be invited to the concluding event of the project in Brussels on May 9 – the Day of Europe! Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the project organizers. The winning team will be announced on March 1. The working language of the event is English; declarations can be written both in Estonian and English.
The full programme of the event will be available soon!
