The expiration of a gas transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia on 1 January 2025 significantly impacted Transnistria, Moldova’s secessionist region, which relied on Russian gas to power its industries and generate cheap electricity for both its own citizens and Moldova. As Russia initially refused to supply Transnistria (and Moldova) via its alternate routes unless Moldova paid off Transnistria's $700 million gas debt, Transnistria faced a serious economic and humanitarian crisis.
While Russia’s actions have been interpreted as a power-play to undermine the Moldovan government ahead of the 2025 parliamentary elections, Moldova has taken advantage of the crisis to offer a reintegration plan for the de facto state. Will Transnistria accept this plan, or will they refuse to Moldova? What are the repercussions for Moldova and the region if Transnistria accepts or rejects reintegration?
Join us in our DeFacto Dialogues seminar where we discuss the impact of these developments on the Transnistrian and Moldovan states and societies, as well as explore several future scenarios.
