Polarisation is one of the most pressing challenges in today’s societies. It divides communities, shapes public debate, and affects how people relate to one another. But what exactly is polarisation, where does it come from, and - most importantly - what can we do about it?
The MOOC “Growing Apart: What Is Polarisation and What Can We Do About It?” offers a comprehensive understanding of polarisation as a complex social phenomenon. You will explore its definitions, causes, and consequences and learn how to recognise polarisation in everyday life. Together, we will uncover the mechanisms that contribute to divisions and identify ways to foster dialogue and reconciliation. The course consists of four thematic modules and a final test. All learning takes place online through pre-recorded video lectures, readings, and discussion forums.
This course has been created by the lecturers and instructional designers from the University of Warsaw, University of Groningen, University of Tartu and the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society.
